The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) has started testing more products from China after several brands of candy and cookies were found positive for formaldehyde, a disinfectant linked to cancer in humans. BFAD has also begun testing eight Chinese toothpaste brands for the presence of toxic chemicals, adding that local cosmetic products will be next in line.
BFAD deputy director Joshua Ramos said that the eight brands, which he did not name, are suspected to contain diethylene glycol (DEG), a coolant that lowers the freezing point of liquids. DEG are reportedly used in motorcycles and can cause allergy to the lips and may be lethal if ingested.
Ramos further stated that the toxicity of food products or cosmetics could cause chronic or acute poisoning, depending on how much of the product was ingested by the victim.
BFAD are to examine and analyze 861 products but they are not to include unregistered imported products.
The bureau also urged distributors and vendors to withdraw the products from the market “until such time that there is evidence that the safety of the goods is assured and that the same are fit for human consumption.”
